The present York Spit Light marks the approach to the York River from the Chesapeake Bay. A lightship was first stationed there in 1855. Confederate soldiers destroyed it during the Civil War. The permanent screwpile light shown on the right was constructed and lit on November 15, 1870. It remained in operation until June 1960, when it was dismantled and replaced with the 30 foot automated flashing beacon shown to the below.
This structure was further damaged by hurricanes and Nor'East Storms in the 1980s and 90's. Today not much of the structure remains above the water line. The beacon is positioned on a single pole.
